Some weeks ago we were telling you here how the low numbers on the mint of the new 2 euro coins from Spain that commemorate the 50th birthday of the King Felipe and the one of the inclusion of Santiago de Compostela in the UNESCO World Heritage list made them to achieve high prices and might make them hard to obtain in the future.

The grade of the coin, the market demand and its rarity (i.e. The number of surviving specimens of a particular issue) are among the key elements you should consider.

This week we bring you a new curiosity, a list of some of the most expensive coins along with their similar low-cost version. With low-cost version we mean those that can be purchased at a much lower price just because they are from a different year or a different mint, keeping the same design as the expensive version.

WARNING! It is very important to take into account the details here, these coins are not the exact same coin, that’s why they don’t have the same value, small details will define the value of the coin. 2 Euro Coin from Finland 2006

The first coin we are going to talk about is the 2 Euro coin from Finland minted in 2006. This coin was minted with a partial error in the map that included the new map that will be used after 2007. 55.000 where minted and the value of the erroneous coin it’s about 90 euros. Here you have its details:

• Year: 2006
• Facial Value: 2 euros
• Mintage: 55.000
• Reason for a high price: Partial ERROR in the minted map.
• Price: ~91 Euros

2 Euro Coin from Greece 2006

The 2 Euro coin from Greece, depending on the year has very different prices. Specifically the coin from 2007 is very expensive, since it can reach up to around 80 euros. Just to mention other examples of this same coin, the cost of the one from 2004 is around 74 euros and the one from 2011 is around 50 euros. All this is due to the fact that the number of the coins minted during those years was much lower than the others. Here you have the details of the most expensive one:

• Facial Value: 2 euros
• Mintage: 25.000
• Reason for a high price: Low mintage in some years (2007 in this case)
• Price: ~77 Euros

Low-Cost Version:

• Difference: Mintage year.

Again there is a much cheaper version with the same design, we only need to change the mintage year to 2002. Here you have a few for those of you that are interested:

2 Euro Coin from Slovenia 2011

The 2 Euro standard circulation coin from Slovenia, has a similar situation than the one from Greece, now with the one from 2011, that might reach around 55 euros. This is due to the fact that this coins, in 2011, where only made in low quantities and only distributed in the form of sets, therefore the price is much higher. Here is the info of this coin:

• Year: 2011
• Facial Value: 2 euros
• Mintage: Not Available
• Reason for a high price: Low mintage in 2011 and some other years.
• Price: ~55 Euros

Low-Cost Version:

• Difference: Mintage year.

And here you have its low cost version with the same design, only changing the minting year to 2007. Take advantage and buy it now before the sellers run out of them!

2002 2 Euro Coin Value

2 Euro Coin from San Marino 2003

The coins from San Marino are famous because they are not precisely cheap, but their price might vary a lot depending on the year, since, as in the previous coin, some years this coin was only minted in low quantities and in sets. Specially the coin of 2003 is being sold around 90 Euros, while the ones from 2004 and 2006 are sold around 89 and 49 euros respectively.

• Mintage: 70.000
• Reason for a high price: Low mintage in 2003 and some other years (only through sets).
• Price: ~90 Euros

Low-Cost Version:

• Difference: Mintage year.

In this case it is not a very cheap coin compare to its face value, however if you compare it to the previous one instead you can get a San Marino coin for not a bad price. The only difference with the previous one is the year, since the design is the same. Here you have it:

2 Euro Coin from The Vatican 2006

Coins from the Vatican City have a similar problem than the previous ones, the price is never very cheap, but in a similar way we can save some euros if we select properly the year. Specially the version from 2006 is a coin that costs more than a 100 euros, and in the same way, the ones from the following years: 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010, have a price of 100, 61, 70 and 54 euros respectively. This is the info of the most expensive one among them:

• Country: Vatican City
• Year: 2006
• Facial Value: 2 euros
• Mintage: 85.000 and 16.000 in Proof
• Reason for a high price: Low mintage in 2006 and some other years (only through sets).
• Price: ~90 Euros

Low-Cost Version:

• Difference: Mintage year.

However the coin from year 2013, even though it has the same design it can be purchased at a much lower price:

2 Euro Coin from France 2008

Usually the two euro coin from France is not a very pricy coin, however this standard circulating coin was only minted in the year 2008 in the form of coin sets, therefore leading to be highly valued, being sold around 36 euros. Here you have its details:

• Country: France
• Year: 2008
• Facial Value: 2 euros
• Mintage: 60.000
• Reason for a high price: Low mintage in 2008 (only through sets).
• Price: ~36 Euros

Low-Cost Version:

• Difference: Mintage year.

I , like all those living in the Eurozone, was mildly interested in the Euro when it burst into our lives on January 1st 2002. At first I only came into contact with German Euro Coins but slowly with the free flow of people and money within the Eurozone other interesting coins from France,Holland,Greece,Ireland...began to appear on the scene.

This led at first to a somewhat perfunctory collecting of the new arrivals that I received as change.

I then bought a cheap pre-punched folder into which I put the Euro Coins from the different Euro countries (12 at that time).Then I bought a book on Euromünzen(Euro Coins) and soon discovered that there was a wealth of interesting facts concerning the Euro in general and Euro Coins in particular.

I have since become an enthusiastic collector of Euro Coins and look forward to sharing with you via my internet site some of the fascinating things I have learned regarding Euro Coins over the last few years.

To start with let me clarify what I mean by Euro Coins - I refer to the coins used throughout the eurozone as the normal means of payment.

A number of 'exotic' Euro Coins are minted in each country with face values differing from the standard coins-e.g. 3 € , 10 € 100 € coins. These are valid only within the country they were minted in as a means of payment (legal tender) .They are however minted solely for collectors and allowing them to be used as a means of payment is simply a trick to avoid having to pay value added tax on them.

These 'exotic' coins are not (at least not yet) covered in my site.

Euro Coins By Country

OK the stage is now set and I invite you to browse around my site - I'm sure you'll find much of interest and a number of lesser known and curious facts about the Euro.

First of all some basic facts about the Euro.

To avoid confusion - theEuro first became official currency in 2002 although from 1999 it was an'electronic currency' used by banks and the financial markets. Somecountries had started minting coins from 1999 - these however only came intocirculation at the beginning of 2002.

Some states (e.g. Andorra ) havethe Euro as their official currency although they do not mint any coins oftheir own. This has now changed - since 2014 Andorra now has its own coins minted. Other states (Monaco,San Marino and the Vatican) although they mint theirown coins are not members of the European Union.

Although to collect all the Euro coins produced is beyond most people's budgets (although still doable),by selecting a suitable sub niche of the market a modest outlay will enable you to complete your chosen niche - every collector's dream!

Rare 2 Euro Coins Greece

The eight Euro Coin denominations incirculation are:

• 1 cent, 2 cent, 5 cent - copper coloured
• 10 cent,20 cent, 50 cent - brass coloured
• 1 Euro - silver centre surrounded by a gold ring
• 2 Euro - gold centre surrounded by a silver ring.

One side of the Euro coins remains the same regardless of the country it was minted in. This is the common side that displays the value of the coin.

On the other side (National Side) a motif (or several motifs ) appear which are representative of the country of issue.

This varies from only one motif e.g. Ireland to 8 motifs e.g. Greece.

At the present time (2017)there are 23 states that mint their own Euro coins - these together with the yearwhen they commenced minting are listed (alphabetically) below.

Countries and years of Minting

Commemorative Coins.
Initially it was decided that the country specific sides of the Euro coins could not be changed. This decision was reversed in 2004 which in effect gave birth to the two Euro commemorative coins (also known as commemorative issues) - a welcome decision for collectors.
The new freedom was however circumscribed with certain conditions and recommendations.
Firstly to preserve a sense of continuity and to avoid the general public becoming confused it was decreed that the standard national side could not be changed before 2008 unless the head of state depicted on the coin should die beforehand. (This did in fact happen in the case on Monaco and the Vatican).
Frequency: Each country may only issue one commemorative per year.

As from 2013 this will be changed to two commemorative coins per year.
Quantity : The number of commemorative coins issued by any country in a year is restricted to the larger of:
a ) 0,1 % of the total number of 2 Euro coins in circulation in the whole Euro zone.
(this limit can be increased to 2 % if an event of special significance is to be
commemorated but then the issuing country may not issue any further commemorative 2 Euro coins for four years)
b) 5 % of the 2 Euro coins in circulation in the country issuing the commemorative coin.
There have been three general commemorative issues - where the coins were issued by all members of the European Union who are also in the Euro zone.

These were:

• 2009 commemorating 10 years of the European customs union.
• 2012 commemorating 10 years of the Euro as official currency in the Euro zone.
• 2015 commemorating 30 years of the European flag representing the EU.

The design on these issues was the same for all countries , the name of the issuing country is however also shown.
States were allowed to issue their own national commemorative 2 Euro coins in these years - so in effect the rule allowing only one commemorative coin per year was relaxed in this instance.
Note these general commemorative coins were not issued by Monaco, San Marino or the Vatican as although they are in the Euro zone, they are not members of the European union.
